Profile
Bruno Medronho is a Principal Researcher at the University of Algarve.
He is also a Visiting Professor in the Surface and Colloid Engineering (FSCN) group at Mid Sweden University.
Academic Background
He obtained his PhD in Macromolecular Chemistry from the University of Coimbra in 2009.
His doctoral studies were supported by an international joint scholarship, which included two years of training at Lund University, Sweden.
International Experience
- His international experience was further strengthened through research stays at the University of Paderborn, Germany, and Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
Scientific Background
With a background in Chemistry and a specialisation in soft matter and biopolymers, his research focuses on intermolecular interactions in complex systems.
In particular, his work has addressed the role of amphiphilicity in biopolymer processing.
Research Line Developed
- Since joining the University of Algarve in 2012, he has established a new research line dedicated to the dissolution, regeneration and development of novel bio-based materials from biopolymers.
Scientific Coordination
- He currently coordinates the Plant Protection, Genetics, and Biotechnology group at MED – Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development.
Applied Research and Sustainable Valorisation
His work focuses on the green extraction, dissolution and functionalisation of biomolecules such as cellulose and lignin.
These approaches are aimed at developing sustainable solutions with applications in agriculture, food, cosmetics, energy and bioremediation.
