Profile

  • Catarina Campos is an Assistant Researcher at the University of Évora (MED/UE).

  • Her position is funded under the FCT 2023 Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus.

Academic Background

  • She obtained her PhD from ICBAS – University of Porto in 2013.

  • Her doctoral studies were supported by a joint Portugal–Norway FCT scholarship.

Scientific Background

  • Her research focuses on understanding how plants respond to environmental stress.

  • She has a particular interest in the molecular and epigenetic mechanisms underlying interactions between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF).

Research Areas

  • Her work seeks to understand how these symbiotic relationships enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stress and contribute to the development of more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.

Postdoctoral Research

  • During her postdoctoral research, between 2016 and 2019, supported by FCT funding, she investigated pasture productivity in acidic soils within montado systems.

  • This work contributed to a deeper understanding of the effects of manganese toxicity on wheat and highlighted the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities in modulating plant molecular responses and bioprotection mechanisms under stress conditions.

Current Activity at MED/UE

  • At MED/UE, she leads a research line integrating experimental epigenetics in the laboratory with bioinformatic analysis of high-throughput sequencing data.

  • Her work combines fundamental and applied science to address challenges related to plant resilience, soil–plant interactions and sustainable agricultural production, with particular relevance to Mediterranean environments.

Scientific Collaboration and Teaching

  • She collaborates with multidisciplinary teams at MED/UE, including Plant Virology, Soil Microbiology, and Plant Breeding and Biotechnology.

  • She also maintains collaborations with international partners, including IRTA, in Spain, and the Czech Academy of Sciences.

  • In addition to her research activities, she contributes to teaching in Plant Biotechnology and related fields at the University of Évora, and also participates in the co-supervision of postgraduate students.
