Academic Background
- Lénia Rodrigues holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Évora (2009).
- She obtained a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Algarve (2012) and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Évora (2017).
PhD and Specialisation
- Her doctoral research focused on the role of salivary proteins in taste sensitivity.
- This work provided advanced training in proteomics and protein identification by mass spectrometry, in collaboration with the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and the University of Aveiro.
Current Scientific Activity
- She is currently a researcher at MED – Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development, University of Évora, where she is an integrated member of the Plant Genetics and Biotechnology Research Group.
- Her research focuses on the physiological and molecular responses of plants to abiotic stress in Mediterranean species, integrating physiological approaches with proteomic and metabolomic analyses to identify mechanisms underlying stress resilience.
Teaching and Project Participation
- She has also been involved in teaching activities at the University of Évora, contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate education in the fields of biology and plant sciences.
- She has participated in several national and international research projects addressing seed biology, plant stress responses, the valorisation of Mediterranean crops, and the application of biostimulants in agronomically relevant species.
Scientific Output
- She is the author or co-author of 22 peer-reviewed publications, including 10 as first author and 2 as corresponding author.
- She is also the author of book chapters and scientific conference proceedings, and has presented her work at numerous national and international conferences.
- Her contributions address topics including plant stress resilience, metabolomic phenotyping and the application of biostimulants in agriculture.
Supervision and Advanced Training
- Her academic activities include the supervision and co-supervision of undergraduate, Master’s and PhD students.
- She also has experience in training in omics methodologies and data analysis.
Scientific Recognition
- Her work has received several awards, including multiple Best Poster Awards.
- Her standing within the scientific community is also reflected in her editorial responsibilities and regular peer-review activities.
Editorial Activities and Peer Review
- She has served as Topic Editor and Assistant Guest Editor for several special issues of journals including Frontiers, Plants, Agronomy, Forests and BMC Plant Biology.
- She currently serves as Topic Editor Coordinator for several special issues in the field of plant sciences.
- She is also a regular reviewer of manuscripts for several international journals in the fields of plant biology, biotechnology and molecular sciences.
Science Communication and Public Engagement
- She maintains a strong commitment to science communication and public engagement.
- Since 2021, she has actively participated in initiatives such as Ciência Viva, hosting students in laboratory settings and promoting hands-on learning experiences.
- She has also developed outreach activities for different educational levels and participated in events such as the European Researchers’ Night, contributing to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and encouraging interest in science among younger audiences and the general public.
