Academic Background
- Rui Guerra obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Lisbon in 1991.
- He completed his Master’s degree in Particle Physics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon in 1995 and obtained his PhD in Physics, specialising in Plasma Physics, from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, in 1999.
Academic and Institutional Experience
- Since 1996, he has been a member of the teaching staff of the Department of Physics at the University of Algarve.
- He also served as Coordinator of CEOT – Center for Electronics, Optoelectronics and Telecommunications, also based at the University of Algarve, until the end of 2024.
Current Research
- He is currently developing a research line in optical diagnostics, with a strong focus on light scattering and its biological applications.
- His main scientific interests include the application of light-scattering concepts in turbid media to the non-invasive determination of internal quality parameters in fruit.
Technological Application and Collaboration
- This work has a strong industrial component, including ongoing collaboration with industry partners to develop a prototype for fruit sorting based on internal quality attributes.
New Research Lines
- He has also initiated research into the early detection of phytopathological symptoms in plant leaves using visible and near-infrared spectroscopy.
- In parallel, his work includes fundamental studies in diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, chemometrics, light propagation models, and instrumentation.
Applications in Different Fields
- These foundations have enabled the application of optical techniques across diverse areas, including LED lighting in aquaculture, honey characterisation, and infrared spectroscopy.
